The conference is filling us with news – encouraging news, bringing better treatments, prolonging survival, easing pains, lessening symptoms of disease and offering hope to patients and oncologists, but not to Wall Street analysts.

Genentech proved to be The Star of the show and other firms were highlighted but overlooked by the media like OSI and MILLENNIUM whose drugs, Tarceva and Velcade are offering what no other product offers to the sufferers of Lung cancer and multiple myeloma and, surely, of other cancers, including solid tumors.

From today’s news, outside cancer, we picked the one that came from BIOGEN IDEC (BIIB), announcing the discovery of an approach that enables the molecule LINGO-1 to produce large amounts of myelin, a substance essential to the proper functioning of human nerve cells. In diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), the body's immune system attacks myelin, resulting in permanent neurological damage.

Biogen, hopes the discovery will eventually lead to a new generation of therapies to treat MS. Biogen scientists plan to publish their findings in the June edition of the journal Nature Neuroscience.
