In the post-Human Genome Project genomic firms are delivering a lot better than analysts expectations. In today’s news CuraGen (CRGN) and Bayer announced have jointly elected 12 targets for drug screening, with the intent of identifying new therapeutics in the disease areas of obesity and diabetes. These targets represent previously unknown drug targets associated with these diseases. Bayer is applying its small molecule screening technologies and chemistry expertise to identify chemicals that may interact with these targets and potentially be developed into novel treatments for obesity and diabetes. The worldwide annual market for obesity and diabetes therapies is estimated to be $98 billion.

Bayer is pleased with the speed of the discovery and we too.

They are optimistic and anticipate more successes over the coming months. CuraGen id proud of delivering highly refined drug targets that are more relevant to disease than those identified through other, more random approaches to drug discovery. A typical example is a novel gene and protein that CuraGen determined to be mutated in exceptionally thin mice. “If the diminished function of this gene and protein leads to leanness, an inhibitor of this new pathway may prove to be a therapeutic for obesity", the company said.

Bayer and CuraGen will jointly develop a pipeline of small molecule drugs to treat obesity and diabetes. Existing therapies have not successfully addressed the needs of the patients afflicted by these devastating diseases. They will use their respective expertise in genomics and chemistry (chemistry here is very important) to jointly develop and commercialize therapeutics that will effectively treat these patients, ultimately improving their quality of life.

Recently, CuraGen announced that its scientists have discovered a new member of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) family that has been named PDGF-D. This newly discovered protein occurs naturally in the human body and may have broad applications as a therapeutic because of its unique cellular activity and biochemical properties.

In addition, CuraGen scientists are currently evaluating fully human monoclonal antibodies for inhibiting the function of this protein as potential therapeutics to treat cancer, and cardiovascular and kidney diseases.

The genomics firms seem to be erasing many of the problems that analysts tried to assimilate after the declaration of the publishing of the Human Genome. Prohost introduced to its subscribers the prestigious, scientific promising genomics firms long before the publishing of the genomics map. Now we are saying to all the readers of the web, especially those who missed the first opportunity: Do not lose the genomics revolution’s second opportunity, there will be no third one at this price, but there will be a quarter of a century of successes to enjoy.

(Prohost Fax is posted on the web. It is about another promising genomics company.)
