The news from Cytogen that a palladium version of BrachySeed(TM) will be introduced later this year in the U.S. adds to a succession of news - all point to the increasing activities by the firm's management. After announcing that ProstaScint can offer a better and earlier diagnosis for prostate cancer and its spread, today came the announcement of the possible introduction of the advanced version of Brachyseed.

BrachySeed was licensed from DRAXIS Health, Inc.

Draxis stated that its ubsidiary,DRAXIMAGE Inc., received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to market its Palladium-103 brachytherapy implant (BrachySeed Pd-103) for the treatment of prostate cancer and other localized tumors. Cytogen is the sole partner on this product.

What Is Beachytherapy?

Brachytherapy, also known as internal radiation therapy, involves the use of small, rice-sized radioactive pellets directly implanted into the prostate or other areas affected by cancer. Imaging techniques are used to determine placement of the pellets. The pellets target the dose of radiation used in treatment directly to the prostate gland. Palladium-103 seeds decay at three times the rate of Iodine-125 seeds, offering a higher initial dose rate to the target, and are predominantly used with more aggressive tumors.

Draxis expects that BrachySeed Pd-103 will be commercially available later this year. Cytogen already distributes BrachySeed I-125, which was launched in 2001. Both versions of BrachySeed are based on a patented design, which leads to improved dosimetry and a more controlled dose rate to the target. Fully robotic manufacturing permits customized manufacturing of BrachySeed to within 3% of the desired target activity, an industry-leading standard.

Good decisions lead to good results. That's the rule of thumb.
