Experts Available to Discuss Clinical Development of the First Objective Test for Parkinson's Disease June 28, 2000 10:16 AM Eastern Time BOSTON--(BW HealthWire)--June 28, 2000--

Video Footage Also Available; B-Roll Compellingly Illustrates Why The Imaging Agent Altropane(R) Could Soon Be The First Widely Available, Objective Diagnostic For Parkinson's Disease

There is no widely available, objective diagnostic test for Parkinson's Disease (PD), but hope is on the horizon. As described in the June 25, 2000 edition of the New York Times, researchers have demonstrated that the imaging agent Altropane detects even the earliest signs of PD by "lighting up" the relative loss of dopamine-releasing neurons in the brain.

Approximately 250,000 individuals per year visit a physician with new, undiagnosed movement disorders and are therefore candidates for an Altropane scan. Clinical diagnosis is wrong about 20% of the time, however, and accurate detection is especially difficult with younger people because symptoms that suggest PD may actually be associated with a completely different medical condition. A widely available, definitive diagnostic test could ensure the earliest possible medical intervention for people who have PD, and drastically reduce the number of people who are mistakenly diagnosed with the condition.

The company developing Altropane, Boston Life Sciences, reported in April that the agent was 98% accurate in a Phase II clinical trial in differentiating PD from normal individuals. The Company completed enrollment in its Phase III clinical trials in March 2000, and hopes to have Altropane on the market by next year. Altropane is the only diagnostic currently nearing the market in the U.S. for early detection of PD and is also currently in Phase II clinical trials for the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
